“A body has two legs and two hands. If one arm or one leg is weak, the body will not function. For Afghan society to progress, and as a healthy organism, girls must be educated.” ~Mariam’s father
On one side of Afghanistan’s battle lines, rural girls and women flock to schools, learning to read and write, something denied them for centuries. On the other side, education is off limits to females. Girls shackled by illiteracy and tradition are usually married and mothers by the age of 14. Daring to teach girls in one of the dark zones can cost you your life.
