Below is a letter from 10-year-old Maliya Nkungula, a grade five pupil in Chingale Area Development Programme, in Zomba district, southern part of Malawi. Maliya writes to Obama and other leaders of G8 and in her letter, she addresses some of the problems that children are facing due to hunger, for example going to bed and school without taking any food. According to Maliya, her wish is to see children stop dying from hunger and having plenty food.
My country is currently facing hunger due to shortage of rains and fertilizer. Children do sleep on empty stomach and go to school without taking any food. This affects our studies. Sometimes we fail to concentrate in class. I wanted leaders of developed countries to help us with fertilizer and irrigation farming. I wish to see children stop dying from hunger and having plenty of food. As children, we aspire to become presidents and ministers in future.
