Happy International Day of the Girl!

Girls face huge challenges to get an education, support their family, have access to healthcare and receive protection from harm.

This is what we know: 67% of all the illiterate people in the world are women and girls. They are denied access to education because of early marriage, cultural practices, gathering water, working to support the family and in some cases due to gender based violence. And yet, when a girl is educated she has the ability to transform not only her family and her community, but her nations.

  • When girls receive 7 years of schooling, they marry 4 years later and have 2.2 fewer children. (United Nations Population Fund)
  • When 10% more of its girls go to school, a country’s GDP increases an average of 3%. (Council on Foreign Relations)
  • Educated mothers are 50% more likely to immunize their children. And when more girls are educated, a country’s malnutrition and HIV rates decline. (UNGEI, the Council on Foreign Relations)

Today on International Day of the Girl, we celebrate the unique gifts of girls. We work toward providing opportunities for them to show leadership and reach their full potential. Celebrate with us today by giving a gift of any amount to Strong Women, Strong World in honor of girls everywhere.
