“Hello, my name is _______ and I am a constituent from __________. I’d like to thank the Senator for voting yes on the Trafficking in Government Contracting Act (S Amen. 3124). I would now like the Senator to focus on passing the Reauthorization of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (S. 1301) immediately. Thank you.”
Just a little after 3pm EST the amendment to End Trafficking in Government Contracting was passed in the Senate! Thank you to all of you who called! We are asking the Senate to follow this important step by now, reauthorizing the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, the cornerstone of the United State’s fight against Human Trafficking!
We still need your voice! Make your two calls today!
Act NOW to prevent human trafficking in government military contracting!
Today the Senate is considering the National Defense Authorization Act. Attached to the bill is an amendment to end human trafficking in government contracting and it needs your voice TODAY. Senate amendment 3124 would address the enslavement of nearly 700,000 workers from around the world in Afghanistan and Iraq by U.S. contractors. Workers from India, Bangladesh, Fiji, and the Philippines are tricked with the promise of well-paying jobs and find themselves in combat zones, making significantly less than they were promised in unsafe conditions and unable to leave.
Colleagues at International Justice Mission, who have been working tirelessly on this legislation, have provided useful background about the problem and the bill this amendment is based on. This legislation has a strong chance of passing and becoming law. The House passed a similar amendment in June and the President issued an Executive Order in September. The Executive Order is an important step but legislation on slavery in government contracting is crucial.
We aren’t giving up on the TVPRA. The TVPRA gained two new cosponsors this week: Senator Udall of New Mexico and Senator Inouye of Hawaii. We are still looking for ways for it to be passed this session in the Senate but Senate rules prevent it from being attached to the Defense Authorization bill.
TODAY: Call both your Senators and ask them to support two bills: The Ending Human Trafficking in Government Contracting amendment (S Amen. 3124) and the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (S. 1301).
